Unfortunately the Sixmilewater Pool League was unable to get sufficient teams to make it viable to run a League this season. We hope to be back in business for the 2012/2013 season. Meanwhile players can still take part in events run by the Northern Ireland Pool Association. All details on their website.

Knockout Cup Final

McKenna's 7-6 Barneys (after play-off frame)

McKenna's Pool Team made it a clean sweep of all trophies in the Sixmilewater pool League this season after winning the Knockout Cup by the narrowest of margins. The teams finished level 6-6, but Stephen Johnstone stepped up to the mark and won the play-off frame to give McKenna's the trophy. Well done to both teams for a really exciting match.

Charity Shield Final

McKenna's 7-4 Fountain

McKenna's continued on their quest to make it a clean sweep of all trophies in the Sixmilewater Pool League as they won the Charity Shield in a tight match with the Fountain Snooker Club. The match was nip and tuck up to 4-4 but McKenna's just edged away and lifted the trophy when Raymond Christie sunk the final black of the evening for a 7-4 win. Only Barney's stand in McKenna's way now on Friday 20th May.

Congratulations to Stephen Johnston. The McKenna's cueman is the new 2011 Sixmilewater Individual Champion. He beat Barney's Darren Shannon by 5-2 in the final played in Barneys on Wednesday 4th May. Both finalists receive an invite to the NI Master to be played on 15th May in Bangor.

McKenna's storm to 3 A Sides title

Congratulations to McKenna's trio (pictured right) off Stephen Johnston, Ivan Christie and Damian McGarrell who have just won the Sixmilewater 3 A sides title.

They eased through their Semi Final by a 5-0 scoreline to set up a mouth watering Final against the Fountain trio (bottom right) of Colin Bingham, Mark Campbell and William Campbell, who had a 5-2 victory in their Semi Final.

Frame 1 - Great clearance by Johnston ending with a red onto black follow through. 1-0
Frame 2 - W.Campbell hung a difficult black to leave a tap in for McGarrell. 2-0
Frame 3 - Christie eventually gets the better of Bingham. 3-0

Father & Son are just Champion

What a fantastic achievement, one that certainly won't be forgotten by James McGarrell and his 13 year old son Declan Duff (pictured right). The pair who play for McKenna's Pool Team have just won the 2011 Sixmilewater Doubles Competition beating Maddens pairing of K.McErlaine & C.McDowell (below right) in the final on Wednesday 23rd March.

Both teams had won their Semi Final ties by 3-1 to set up a much anticipated final. And what a final it was. The Maddens boys led 3-0 and had a straightforward finish on to make it 4-0 and take the title, but they didn't close it out and young Declan finished to bring it back to 1-3. It then went to 2-3 as James took out an 8 ball clearance in frame 5. And he repeated the dose in frame 6, another 8 baller to level the match at 3-3. The deciding frame, and soon the dream had come true as the McKenna's pairing wrapped up frame and match to deservedly become the 2011 Champions. It's a great boost for Declan, who was outstanding the whole night, before he heads off to Bridlington in April with the Northern Ireland Under 21 Team for the European Masters.

The 2010/2011 Sixmilewater Pool League will be starting on the *** 29th September 2010 *** with the first league fixture, We have 8 teams challenging, in what will be another exciting season in the Antrim area.

Barneys, Maddens, Galleon, Steeple, Muckamore CC, McKenna's, Fountain SC and Moes Grill will battle it out for all the prizes.

Antrim and Carrick remember "The Glove"

Antrim and Carrick Pool Leagues played an inaugural Interleague match today 23rd May in memory of Willie Lucas. The fixture which will be an annual event, was held in Whitehead Glasgow Rangers SC played out on 3 Simply Pool tables. Willie lived in Antrim but played in both Leagues, Carrick on a Tuesday night for The Scorpions and Antrim (Sixmilewater) on a Wednesday for the Fountain Snooker Club. Next years fixture will be held in Moes Grill, Antrim. A perpetual Cup was put up by Willie's father Philip, and members of Willie's family were down to present it to the victors.

Antrim ran out 27-17 winners in the 4x sessions of 11 match winning each session 8-3, 7-4, 6-5 and 6-5. Best performers for Antrim were Rab Fee and Darren Clarke both with 4/4 and for Carrick, Rab Butler also had 4/4. But the day was more about the occasion than the result as both teams remembered their friend, Willie " The Glove " Lucas.

An Individual Competition was held afterwards with Jordan Brown from Antrim beating Carricks Rab Butler in the Final to claim the first prize of £60

Tragic loss

Pool in Antrim and across Northern Ireland is in mourning today after the death of Willie Lucas. Willie who recently took up the position of NIPA Chairman died suddenly at his home in Antrim, on Monday evening 4th January. Affectionately known as "The Glove" Willie played for the Fountain Snooker Club and also managed the Northern Ireland B1 Team. He will be very sadly missed by everyone in the Pool scene, from Antrim to the International stage. Our thoughts at this moment are with the family circle. RIP Willie

Willie's funeral will take place in Derriaghy Church (just off the M1 between Dunmurry and Lisburn) at 11.00 am on Friday 8th January

The NIPA will be staging an International Pool Qualifiers Competition. On the 11th, 12th & 13th of September 2009, we will be running Competitions in The Park Plaza Hotel (pictured right), at Belfast International Airport. Entry will be £10 plus £7 Registration.
The Competitions will be run to a "Pyramid" type format of single frame pool, no elimination.

Double Delight

Antrim's Rab Fee is the 2009 NIPA Individual Champion. And just to make it a perfect day his partner Claire Stewart won the Ladies Title. From a field of 64 Rab battled his way to the Final, where he came up against Neil McKelvey from Larne, who earlier in the day had strolled impressively to the NIPA All Ireland Blackball Crown. Rab was 2-0 down in the Final but came back to trail only 4-3. In the 8th frame McKelvey looked to have won it, but hampered by cueing over the top of a ball, he narrowly missed the black to the middle. Rab then took control to level at 4-4 and with the break in his favour in frame 9, a classy break and dish sealed the title for the Railway Bar cueman. Claire who also plays for the Railway, had a scare in her opening round match scraping a 4-3 win. But after that she never looked back, and ran out an easy 5-2 Final winner over Kim Dockery from Bangor. Congratulations to the pair who have added the two Individual Titles to Sixmilewaters Interleague victory, to make Antrim the hotbed of Northern Ireland Blackball Pool for 2009. Willie Lucas, NIPA Vice Chairman is pictured presenting the Winners with their trophies. On the Friday night at the impressive Park Plaza Hotel venue, the NIPA beat their Southern Irish opponents 51-48 in an International Challenge match.

NIPA Under 21s Champion

18 year old Stephen Carson (red tshirt) from Carrickfergus is the NIPA Under 21s 2009 Champion. In an action packed Competition up in Ballymena United Social Club,and from a strong field of 34 players, he beat 19 year old Raymond Christie (blue tshirt) from Upper Ballinderry, Lisburn, 5-1 in the Final. Raymond, who plays out of The Horse Shoe Inn in our League, had come through 4 last frame deciders including 1 which was reracked twice to make the Final. But he had no answer to young Carsons potting and cue ball positioning in the Final. Thanks to all the players who took part and again a big thanks to May Boyd and Ballymena United Social Club for the use of their facilities.

Irish Blackball Pool Championships

CHAMPIONS

SIXMILEWATER are the 2009 NIPA Interleague Champions. On a day of high drama, Captain Darren Shannon held the trophy aloft after a 12-3 win over Ballymena in the Final. 11 Teams entered the Competition which was held on 8 quality tables in the impressive Ballymena United FC Social Club. The 3 group winners and the best runner up from the 2 groups of 4 qualified for the Semi Finals. In the Semi Finals last years winners North Down & Ards couldn't reach the same heights, going down 12-8 to a consistent Ballymena side. And in the other Semi, last years Finalists Carrick, took the eventual winners to a final frame before going down 12-10. After a draw in their Group match, everyone was expecting another close encounter in the Final, but Sixmilewater moved up a gear and led 8-3 at the half way stage. And not to long after, it was Roger Smyth who potted the final black of the day for a 12-3 win which sent the Antrim lads and supporters wild with delight. Well done to the Ballymena team for making the Final.

Our 'B' team Captained by Claire Stewart also excelled, first holding a strong Carrick 'B' team to an 11-11 draw, and then nearly causing the shock of the tournament as they led holders North Down & Ards most of the way only to go down 12-10 at the final frame.

Rules Change For New Season

From Season 2008/9 we will be playing the new EBA 'Blackball Rules' as supported by the N.I.P.A. Other Leagues who have moved over to Blackball are - Coleraine, Larne, Carrick, and North Down & Ards. The links at the bottom of this post will help explain them in full. All the main changes are listed next.

Blackball Rules - Main Changes

No "D"
Instead of a "D" there is the Baulk - Play from anywhere any direction within the baulk area.

Determining your colour group
1/ Never on a break shot.
When object ball/s are potted on the break - they are ignored - It's still an open table.
The player is still in control and plays another open table shot.
2/ Never on a foul shot.
If a foul is committed any colour balls potted are ignored - It's still an open table.
3/ Never on a free shot, following a foul.
4/ Never when ball/s of both colours are potted.
potting one or more of each colour - they are ignored - It's still an open table.
Potting one or more of a single colour - you are on that colour.

After the Cue Ball strikes the object ball in any shot
either : A Ball must be potted,
or At least one ball of any sort Must hit a cushion

Object 'Ball-on' already touching a cushion
After the cue ball strikes this ball
either - The cue ball or some other ball must touch a cushion
or - That object ball must touch a cushion other that the one that it's touching

If the break is not a legal break
The opponent is awarded one free shot plus one visit.
The player may play the cue ball from where it lies.
or he/she has the option to play the cue ball from baulk or a re-rack if he/she chooses.
(To include one visit after the break shot. )

Re-spotting ball/s (after they leave the table)
Object balls are respotted on the Black spot as before but if this cannot be done
(eg occupied balck spot) in a line up the centre of the table, as close to the black spot as possible
but AWAY from the baulk area (for several balls the order is Black - Red - Yellow)

Stationary ball falling into a pocket
As long as it has been stationary for more than 5 seconds it is replaced.
Should you be playing the cue ball to hit that ball but it falls before any contact, no foul,
any balls moved in that shot are resited, the dropped ball replaced and the shot re-taken

Playing out of a snooker situation
relieves the player from having to cause a ball to strike a cushion

The Combination (Skill) Shot
Player on the his/her last colour ball
May pot the last colour ball AND the Black, in the same legal shot
Player on the Black
May pot the Black ball AND an opponent's Ball/s, in the same legal shot

2009 AGM
